In the mid-1980s, the Provisional IRA launched a campaign of attacks against the security forces, using a 'no-go zone' strategy to change the face of the war in Northern Ireland. On a spring night in May 1987, the Brigade launched a fatal attack on a Royal RUC base in Loughgall, but the British were waiting.
