Description
Deaf Republic by Ilya Kaminsky is a powerful and poignant collection of poems that explores the complexities of silence and dissent in the face of oppression. Set against a backdrop of political unrest, this remarkable parable unfolds episodically like a play, revealing the ways in which ordinary lives are shaped by extraordinary events. A tragic opening scene sets the tone for the rest of the book, as a gunshot silences an entire community, prompting them to find new ways to communicate and resist. Through the stories of several characters, Kaminsky confronts the brutal realities of violence and the importance of collective action, while also exploring the personal costs of resistance. This thought-provoking collection is both a love story, an elegy, and an urgent plea, one that challenges readers to consider their own role in the face of injustice.
