Description

Shayne Carter's memoir takes readers behind the scenes and songs of his life in music, tracing an intimate history of the Dunedin Sound.

The legendary musician recounts his experiences with riotous teenage bands Bored Games and the Doublehappys, as well as his best-known bands Straitjacket Fits and Dimmer. He also shares candid stories about the pop culture of the seventies, eighties and nineties, and the bleak and violent aspects of his hometown.

Alongside fellow musicians, friends and family, Carter writes vividly about neighbours, kids at school, people on the street, and other passing characters who have stayed in his memory. His life has also been shaped by sport, providing a similar solace and escape as music.
