Description

David Batchelor - Concretos A series of sculptures that explore the relationship between color and materiality, Concretos combines concrete with a variety of found materials to create complex, layered works. The first Concreto was made in 2011 after the artist encountered colored glass shards in a Palermo wall. Since then, these sculptures have evolved into more intricate adventures in pattern and process, incorporating elements such as acrylic plastic, spray paint, and household gloss paint. The most recent works, Extra-Concretos, retain the simplicity of their predecessors while working on a larger scale. This publication features a text by David Batchelor that charts the origins and development of Concretos, as well as essays by curator Eleanor Nairne and architectural historian Adrian Forty that explore the sculptures' material possibilities and relationship with modernity.
