Description

Dara is set in 1659 Mughal India, a place of opulence and excess. The imperial court is ruled by two brothers, who are heirs to the Muslim empire. Their mother's death inspired the Taj Mahal, and now they fight fiercely for succession. One brother, Dara, has the love of the people - and his emperor father - but his younger brother Aurangzeb holds a different vision for India's future. Islam inspires poetry in Dara, while puritanical rigour is more appealing to Aurangzeb. Their sister Jahanara tries to mediate between them. As tensions rise, the brothers' differing views threaten the stability of the empire. This novel explores the complexities of power, loyalty and identity in a richly detailed historical setting.
