Description
The Curtiss P-40 B, C, D, E is a detailed guide to the development and production of this iconic fighter aircraft. In 1939, the US Army Air Forces decided to produce the Curtiss P-40, primarily due to its relatively low airframe price and the availability of existing fuselage components from the Curtiss P-36. The design process was driven by increasing performance requirements, particularly a significant increase in maximum speed. To achieve this, the aircraft underwent several aerodynamic refinements, including changes to the exhaust system, air intake, and coolers under the nose. These modifications were tested in the NACA wind tunnel before further refinements were made using techniques such as smooth riveting and retractable tail rings. The result of these efforts was a significant increase in speed, with the aircraft reaching 589 km/h at 4570 m. This achievement paved the way for the P-40's serial production and marked an important milestone in the development of fighter aircraft during World War II.
