Description
Curtis Cuffie was an artist who lived and worked in New York's East Village from the mid-1980s until his death in 2002. He began his career as a teenager, moving to the city from Hartsville, South Carolina, and lived unhoused for much of his adult life. Cuffie gained local notoriety for his street art, collecting discarded materials to create large-scale sculptures along the Bowery and Cooper Square. His arrangements often took the form of delicate shrines, unwieldy processions, and towering structures, some stretching up to thirty feet in length. Despite his efforts, nearly all of his works were removed by the authorities, weather, or sanitation teams. However, his presence in the East Village endured, with his tableaux outside the Village Voice offices admired by students and artists alike. This photobook, the first publication about Cuffie, brings together the efforts of two of his partners: Carol Thompson and Katy Abel. The book features a trove of photographs from the 1990s, preserving the work Cuffie made in the city.
