Description
In 1971, New York City is a city on the brink. Trash piles up on the streets, crime is rampant, and the city is struggling to stay afloat. For Ray Carney, a furniture store owner trying to keep his head down, life is a constant struggle. When he needs tickets to see the Jackson 5 for his daughter, he turns to an old contact, setting off a chain of events that will put his life in danger. As the years pass, the city continues to change. The counterculture is thriving, but Ray's partner, Pepper, remains a constant presence in his life. When Pepper takes on a side gig on a Blaxploitation shoot in Harlem, he finds himself in a world of glamour and danger. Meanwhile, Ray is trying to navigate the complexities of his own life, including a fire that seriously injures one of his tenants and a campaign by his wife to support a rising politician. As the country gears up for the Bicentennial, Harlem is burning, and Ray is caught in the middle. With the help of Pepper, he must navigate a crumbling metropolis run by the shady and the violent to uncover the truth behind the fire and find a way to move forward.
