Description

Consuelo Kanaga: A Pioneering Spirit in American Photography Consuelo Kanaga was a trailblazing photographer who broke ground with her artistic vision and commitment to social justice. Beginning her career as a photojournalist in 1915, she developed a distinctive style inspired by the photography of Alfred Stieglitz. Over six decades, Kanaga produced a remarkable body of work, capturing the complexities of urban life and the struggles of African Americans during a tumultuous period in American history. Her portraits, characterized by modernist formal technique and radical documentary commentary, remain powerful testaments to her innovative spirit. This substantial new appraisal features 200 photographs from the Brooklyn Museum collection, providing a comprehensive look at Kanaga's remarkable career and cementing her place as one of America's most vital 20th-century photographers.
