Deryn Rees-Jones explores the work of women poets who have challenged traditional poetic conventions in her pioneering critical study, Consorting with Angels. Beginning with Edith Sitwell and Stevie Smith, she examines how these pioneers forged individual aesthetics and self-presentation to resist easy categorisation.
Rees-Jones then considers the poetry written in their wake, including works by Moniza Alvi, Carol Ann Duffy, Vicki Feaver, Lavinia Greenlaw, Selima Hill, Kathleen Jamie, Jackie Kay, Gwyneth Lewis, Medbh McGuckian, Alice Oswald and Jo Shapcott. She argues that common strategies emerge among these women poets, linking them to their poetic predecessors and allowing them to explore femininity in their work.
This study sheds light on the ways in which women poets have developed an aesthetic that enables them to express themselves freely, despite the challenges of a male-dominated literary tradition.
