Description

Concrete Mama: Prison Profiles from Walla Walla offers an unflinching look at life inside a maximum-security prison in 1978. Journalists John McCoy and Ethan Hoffman spent four months observing and befriending prisoners and guards, capturing the harsh realities of a community where there was little to do and much to fear.

The result is a striking portrayal of a world that both mimicked and scorned the outside world. With unadorned prose and stunning black-and-white photographs, McCoy and Hoffman provide an authentic glimpse into life behind bars. Originally published in 1981, this book has been revitalized with a new introduction by scholar Dan Berger, providing historical context for its ongoing relevance.

Featuring several previously unpublished photographs, Concrete Mama is a powerful and thought-provoking work that sheds light on a previously unseen world of life inside the prison. This second edition is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in the complexities of the American penal system.
