Description

Clearing Out A Novel by Helene Uri is a moving exploration of identity and family heritage. When a distant relative reveals a long-held secret about her grandfather's ancestry, Norwegian novelist Helene sets out to weave this new knowledge into her writing. Her protagonist, Ellinor Smidt, travels to the far north to study the dying languages of the Sami families there, uncovering a culture rich in history and mystery. As Ellinor delves deeper into the world of the Sami people, she confronts the rift that has existed between two families for generations. Through her persistence and relationships with an elderly Sami activist and a local man, Ellinor grapples with how identities are formed, fractured, and recovered as stories are told. This beautifully constructed novel offers a solemn reflection on the power of storytelling to shape our understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.
