Class Work: Vocational Schools and China's Urban Youth explores the lives of young people who have failed the state's high-stakes exams in China. Through an examination of two urban vocational schools, the author sheds light on the value systems that stigmatize these students as "failures" and the political and economic structures that funnel them into working-class futures. The book reveals that up to half of China's youth are flunked out of the academic education system after 9th grade. By examining the students' backgrounds, experiences, and trajectories into the workforce, Woronov argues that urban vocational schools are not merely holding tanks for academic failures, but rather incipient sites for the formation of a new working class. This study provides a unique insight into the intersections between China's socialist and capitalist modes of production, as well as the rapid transformation of its cities into post-industrial, service-based economies.
