Description
Classical music has long been associated with the white middle classes. However, this connection remains underexplored in academic circles. This book offers a new approach to understanding classical music by examining its relationship with social class and economic inequality. Anna Bull draws on her own experience as a musician to explore how musical institutions, practices, and aesthetics are shaped by wider conditions of economic inequality. Through a richly detailed ethnography, the author locates classical music within one culture - middle-class English youth - and examines how young people learn the unspoken rules of this culture through their involvement in youth orchestra and choir rehearsals.
