Description
Two influential accounts of the Crusades from a Western perspective are presented here. Jean de Joinville's "Life of Saint Louis" and Geoffroy de Villehardouin's "Conquest of Constantinople" offer vivid and reliable insights into this medieval conflict.
Translated by Caroline Smith, these chronicles bring together two distinct narratives that provide a fascinating window on the events of the Fourth Crusade. Villehardouin's account is notable for its simplicity and clarity, while Joinville's work draws on his close association with King Louis IX of France to recount his experiences in the Holy Land.
Published by Penguin Publishing Group, these translations represent a significant contribution to our understanding of this pivotal period in history. With introductions and notes from distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, readers can trust that they are receiving authoritative texts enhanced by expert commentary.
