Description

The Christiad, an epic poem by Marco Girolamo Vida, is a retelling of the life of Christ in Latin verse, inspired by the style of Vergil. Commissioned by Pope Leo X and Clement VII, it was first published in 1535 and went on to become one of the most popular Christian epics of the Renaissance.

Translated into many languages, including Croatian and Armenian, this work was widely imitated by vernacular poets such as Abraham Cowley and John Milton. This new edition presents Vida's Latin text accompanied by extensive notes, offering a fresh perspective on this influential Renaissance poem.

First published in 1535, the Christiad remains an important work of Christian literature from the Renaissance period, with its unique blend of classical style and devotional themes.
