Description

A 1937 Windfall On a stormy night, a young German naval sub-cadet stumbles upon a group of thugs beating up a tramp. He intervenes and saves the man's life, who turns out to be Wilhelm Canaris, chief of the Abwehr. Canaris adopts the young man and names him Cesare after his ability to break through barriers. As Cesare grows up, he becomes embroiled in a complex web of espionage and resistance against the Nazi regime. He helps those in need, including Jews being sent to Theresienstadt, a supposed haven that turns out to be a gateway to Auschwitz. When the woman Cesare loves is captured, he must find a way to rescue her. This literary thriller is set against the backdrop of war-torn Berlin and explores the human cost of a country's descent into darkness.
