Description
Violette Szabo's story is one of remarkable courage and sacrifice. Born in Paris to an English father and French mother, she married Captain Etienne Szabo of the French Foreign Legion in 1940, just before the birth of their daughter. Tragedy struck when her husband died at El Alamein, but Szabo continued to face danger with determination. She became a FANY and was recruited into the SOE, undergoing secret agent training. Her bravery and skill were tested on several occasions, including a successful mission to France despite being arrested and released by the French Police. In 1944, she parachuted into Limoges to coordinate the work of the French Resistance in the aftermath of D-Day. Szabo's ultimate fate was a tragic one: captured by the SS 'Das Reich' Panzer Division and handed over to the Gestapo for interrogation. She was sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, where she was executed at just 23 years old. Her bravery and sacrifice were recognized posthumously with the George Cross and the Croix de Guerre.
