Description
The musical Caroline, Or Change tells the story of a pivotal moment in American history. In 1963, Louisiana, the destruction of a Confederate statue may signal change is in the air, but for one family, life remains largely unchanged. The black maid, Caroline, struggles to cope with her circumstances, while the young son of her employer tries to make sense of his world after losing his mother and facing his father's remarriage. When an opportunity arises for Caroline to take more money home, the consequences for her and the young boy are far-reaching. This powerful portrait of America at a time of great social upheaval explores themes of identity, community, and the human condition. The musical features book and lyrics by Tony Kushner and music by Jeanine Tesori. First performed in New York's Off-Broadway Public Theater in 2003, Caroline, Or Change has been praised for its thought-provoking storytelling and emotional depth. This edition was published alongside a production at Chichester Festival Theatre, which later transferred to Hampstead Theatre, London.
