Description

Carmen Winant's My Birth explores the shared experience of childbirth through a unique blend of photographs and text. The artist interweaves images of her own mother giving birth to her three children with found images of other women undergoing the same experience, creating a collective body that strains and releases in unison. Through this pictorial narrative, Winant asks us to consider the representation of birth in popular culture and its implications as a political act. The book includes an original text by the artist exploring the subjectivity of childbirth and its often-comforting language. By making birth visible, My Birth invites us to rethink our understanding of this universal experience and its representation in art and society.
