Description
Captain Cook in the Underworld is a poem that explores Western mythology and legend as it encounters the South Pacific. Commissioned for the 50th anniversary celebration of Wellington's Orpheus Choir, this book-length work offers fresh perspectives on the familiar story of Cook's Pacific explorations.
The poem blends European myth with Polynesian myth, creating a unique and stylised account of the voyages. As it unfolds, the narrative confronts the damage inflicted by Cook's expeditions on the indigenous peoples of the Pacific, leading to a powerful exploration of European guilt and recognition.
