Description

Goya's Los Caprichos is a collection of 80 prints that showcase the artist's unique vision and commentary on society. After a period of illness, Goya spent five years preparing himself for this burst of creativity, drawing inspiration from French revolutionary philosophers. The prints depict a range of strange creatures, many of which are caricatures of individuals who opposed Goya's views. The work was first published in 1799, but six rare sets of artist's proofs exist, considered by many to be superior to the original publication. This edition reproduces one of these proof sets, along with the "Prado" manuscript and supplementary material. This collection includes a self-portrait of Goya as the frontispiece, as well as unique proofs of other plates and a never-before-published study for Caprichos 10. The work has been translated into English and features an introduction by Philip Hofer, who also curated the facsimile edition in collaboration with Tomas Harris.
