Description

The stories of the Sami people from Scandinavia are rarely found in English translation. By the Fire is an exception, offering a unique glimpse into the world of these indigenous Nordic communities. Collected by Danish artist and ethnographer Emilie Demant Hatt during her travels among the nomadic Sami in Swedish Sápmi between 1907 and 1916, these tales are a matchless pleasure. They feature magical animals, otherworldly girls who marry Sami men, and cannibalistic ogres, as well as stories of plucky girls and women outfoxing their attackers. The book includes Demant Hatt's original linoleum prints, which incorporate her visual memories of Sápmi in a style influenced by the northern European Expressionists after World War I. This collection is a fascinating world of wonder and peril, where nature is imbued with spirits and strangers are outwitted with gumption and craft.
