Description
The devastating chemical attacks by the Saddam régime on Iraqi Kurdistan in the late 1980s left an indelible mark on the region. Sherko Bekes' poem, Butterfly Valley, is a powerful response to these atrocities. Bekes' work weaves together beautifully drawn images of his homeland with scenes of death, destruction and suffering, creating a deeply moving and lyrical poem. This extensive example of Bekes' writing has been translated by Choman Hardi, bringing the poet's outstanding writing to an English-speaking audience for the first time. Published in 2018, Butterfly Valley is a poignant expression of the poet's longing to return home and mourn the victims of these tragic events.
