Description

Building the Barricade is a harrowing and demanding account of the Warsaw uprising, one of the twentieth century's most significant works of war-witness poetry.

The Polish Resistance Home Army barricaded central Warsaw in an attempt to liberate the city and gain Polish sovereignty, caught between German occupation and the advancing Soviets. This is Anna Świrszczyńska's first-person account of the atrocities that destroyed over 60% of the capital, leaving over 100,000 civilians and 16,000 Polish resistance fighters dead.

Świrszczyńska joined the resistance as a military nurse and describes the devastating impact of German bombing raids on the city, burying the living beneath the rubble. Her poetry is a powerful and poignant record of this tragic period in history.
