Description
Brickmaking has played a significant role in building construction across much of the UK since the Roman period. The use of clay brick became more widespread during the Tudor and Stuart eras, but it was only with the advent of industrialisation in the 19th century that brick production increased dramatically. Mechanisation of the brick-making process, combined with advances in kiln technology, enabled mass production of bricks. This led to a significant decrease in unit cost, making bricks an attractive material for building construction. As a result, brickmaking became a localised industry, with brickworks springing up near suitable raw materials and markets. This book explores the history of the brickmaking industry, examining both past and present production sites.
