Description

Chelsea Rare Books, a small antiquarian bookshop in the King's Road, was up for sale in 1972. The Bernards, Leo and Philippa, had no prior experience of bookselling, but the 1970s Chelsea was a lively place. They acquired a diverse stock, including art, modern first editions, and a wide range of subjects. The basement of the shop was home to The Beaufort Gallery, selling prints and paintings. The young women who worked alongside the Bernards became close friends, often introducing each other before moving on to new chapters in their lives. Handling the books was hard work, but the Bernards shared a sense of humour about their efforts. This book tells the story of Chelsea Rare Books and its founders, Philippa Bernard.
