Livius' magnum opus presents a vivid narrative of Rome's rise from its traditional foundation to 9 BC. This comprehensive history spans over 500 years, from the city's establishment in 753 or 751 BC to the imperial autocracy of Augustus.
The work consists of 142 books, with only fragments and summaries remaining for some sections. The fourth decad covers the Second Macedonian War and its aftermath, as well as Rome's conquests in the Hellenistic states from 191 to 180 BC.
This edition offers a fresh translation, based on Briscoe's edition, alongside ample annotation fully current with modern scholarship. It replaces the original Loeb edition by Evan T. Sage, providing a reliable text for scholars and historians.
