Description

Bob Dylan's Rough and Rowdy Ways is a 2020 album that marked the release of new songs written by the artist in eight years. The album was preceded by three previously released songs, including the seventeen-minute "Murder Most Foul," which generated significant attention. The album's critical reception was overwhelmingly positive, and it was well-received by the public. This book explores the motivations behind Dylan's decision to release the album, as well as the production and meaning of the ten songs that follow. The album was followed by a live streaming show, Shadow Kingdom, and a tour in 2021, which featured a setlist including almost all the songs from Rough and Rowdy Ways. The artist also published a new book, The Philosophy of Modern Song, in the wake of the tour. This book offers avenues for understanding the production and meaning of Rough and Rowdy Ways. Author François Guillez is a bilingual French and English speaker who has been a long-time admirer of Bob Dylan. He founded a website dedicated to translating Dylan's songs and interviews into French in 2000, and has since maintained an active online presence as the webmaster of the only active French Bob Dylan site.
