Description
A young Brazilian woman settles into her life in America, thousands of miles away from her lonely mother. They build a connection through Skype calls, asking each other simple questions like "what's the news?" As they navigate their lives - writing papers at midnight and speaking in class - the mother faces personal struggles and the possibility that her daughter might not return home.
Despite the distance, the two women develop new rituals of intimacy and caretaking, sharing whiskey-fueled conversations and watching each other sleep. As the seasons change from autumn to winter, they come to realize that their connection may be fragile and fleeting.
This poignant debut novel explores the complexities of mother-daughter relationships, identity, and belonging in a foreign land.
