Description

Black Power TV by Devorah Heitner explores the emergence of Black public affairs television in 1968. Two local shows, Inside Bedford-Stuyvesant and Say Brother, and national programs Soul! and Black Journal offered innovative programming that showcased African American perspectives and experiences. These shows were initially created to address social unrest during urban uprisings, but they were later reimagined by their producers as platforms for expressing Black critiques of mainstream discourse and promoting Black culture. The national programs played a significant role in shaping the Black Arts Movement and imagining a distinctively African American consciousness. This book examines how regulatory, activist, and textual histories intersect and how Black public affairs television continues to influence representations of African Americans today.
