Description

Sasha Sokolov's novel Between Dog and Wolf is a complex and enigmatic work that defies easy summary. Written in 1980, it has long been challenging for translators due to its intricate use of language, which often takes precedence over plot.

The story is characterized by its instability, with time, characters, and death proving fluid concepts. However, the Russian landscape remains a constant presence, evoking the frozen Volga as a powerful and unyielding force.

Thanks to Alexander Boguslawski's superb translation, English readers can now access what many consider to be Sokolov's best work. This novel is a testament to the enduring influence of Soviet-era literature on contemporary Russian writers.
