Description
Bernard Sabrier's photographs of Vanuatu are a testament to his lifelong fascination with the Pacific archipelago. Given a map of the region by his father as a child, Sabrier has returned to the islands forty years later, armed with a camera and a deep understanding of their cultures.
These candid images capture the people and landscapes that have come to mean so much to Sabrier, formed through personal bonds rather than a patronizing gaze. The history of Vanuatu - from its discovery by the Spanish in 1606 to its current status as a republic - provides context for Sabrier's work, but it is the photographs themselves that reveal the true essence of his project.
Published in French, this book presents Sabrier's vision of Vanuatu and its people, a nuanced and intimate portrayal that invites the viewer to reflect on the complexities of cultural exchange and identity.
