Description

Bernadette Mayer's Memory is a groundbreaking work that synthesizes writing and photography to investigate the nature of memory. In 1971, Mayer embarked on an experiment, shooting a roll of film each day for a month and keeping a journal. The result is a monumental conceptual work comprising over 1,100 photographs, two hundred pages of text, and six hours of audio recording. This "emotional science project" presents a bold and experimental record of the poet's eye as she traverses the present moment, where memory is always there to be entered. The publication brings together the full sequence of images and text for the first time in book form, making space for a work that has been legendary but mostly invisible. Originally exhibited in 1972, Memory was not shown again in its entirety until 2016 at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago and then again in New York City at the CANADA Gallery. This publication offers a unique opportunity to experience Mayer's innovative contribution to conceptual art.
