Description
Behold the Buddha explores how premodern Japanese Buddhists understood and experienced icons in temple settings. Images of the Buddha are ubiquitous, yet their meaning largely depends on the viewer's background and circumstance.
The author reflects on art museums where non-Buddhists first encounter images of the Buddha, before examining the complex Western response to them. He then delves into the visual representations of the Buddha's life, physical attributes, and symbolic gestures in Buddhist iconography.
Through a detailed analysis of various Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and other divinities commonly depicted in Japanese Buddhism, the book sheds light on the "living" quality of these icons within traditional temples and Buddhist rituals. The author concludes by considering art museums as potential sites for discerning the religious character of Buddhist images.
