Description
Laurie Olin's interest in public outdoor seating lies at the intersection of two concerns: the everyday aspects of our lives and experiences, and the role of public seating in fostering community and civic engagement. By sitting in parks or plazas, we participate in the life of a particular space while pursuing our own individual pursuits. The design of chairs and benches is often overlooked, yet it plays a significant role in shaping our interactions with others and with the world around us. From casual dining to social gatherings, people frequently sit together for extended periods, engaging in quiet observation of their surroundings. Over time, various devices have been developed to accommodate these activities. This book presents a series of essays that explore public seating through Laurie Olin's personal observations and professional engagement with the topic. The result is an appreciation of the often-overlooked aspects of our daily lives, revealing the significance of simple yet important design elements in shaping our experiences.
