Description

Anglo-Welsh writer Arthur Machen (1863-1947) has gained deserved recognition for his works of horror and literary fiction. This collection of autobiographical writings offers insight into the life and mind of one of late Victorian literature's most distinctive voices. Machen's autobiographies, including Far Off Things, Things Near and Far, and The London Adventure, present a picture of an artist struggling to make ends meet in a London garret. His experiences as a reporter for the London Evening News during World War I are also documented here. This volume includes a group of separately published essays that provide further understanding of Machen's life and work. Edited by S.T. Joshi, this collection is supplemented by Precious Balms, a reprinting of the hostile reviews Machen received over his lifetime.
