Description
Augustus is a study of the Roman leader's rise to power and his enduring success. In the turbulent context of the breakdown of the Roman Republic, Augustus' adoption by Julius Caesar proved crucial to his ascent. However, it was Augustus who ultimately solved the political crisis that had cost Caesar his life. Through a ruthless and pragmatic approach, Augustus exploited his unique position as "Caesar's heir" to establish a form of government that proved stable for over two centuries. This achievement is a testament to Augustus' consummate political skills. The book provides a nuanced understanding of Augustus' career, demonstrating how he transformed the Roman state and secured his own legacy.
