Description
Aucassin and Nicolette A Facing-page Edition and Translation by Robert Stuart Sturges is a medieval French comic masterpiece. This edition presents the thirteenth-century text alongside a modern English translation on facing pages, offering a unique reading experience. The story follows an aristocratic young lord, Aucassin, and his beloved Nicolette, whose pursuit of him raises interesting questions about gender roles in the Middle Ages. The narrative explores themes of identity, as Nicolette's class, religion, and ethnicity shift throughout the tale. With its daring escapes, exotic travel descriptions, separations, and happy reunions, this work is both a romantic comedy and an entertaining parody of the romance genre. An introduction provides context for the text, outlining its background, genre, literary relations, historical contexts, major themes, and relevance to contemporary audiences.
