Description

Swiss artist Yves Mettler's Atlas Europe Square documents his ongoing mapping and documentation of Europe Squares, Europa Places, Places de l'Europe, and Europaplatzes. Since 2003, Mettler has engaged in this work, examining the built environment as a record of our modes of organization and the compromises we make to live together.

The book extends this body of work into reflections on the relationship between art and public space, site-specificity, and the artist's own implication in the imaginary of Europe. Alongside extensive photographic documentation, Atlas Europe Square contains texts by Mettler alongside essays by Reza Negarestani, Teresa Pullano, Laurent Thévenot, and Stephen Zepke.

Through his work, Mettler interrogates the ideality of "Europe" and the (im)possibility of its concrete instantiation. This book provides a unique insight into the artist's process and the complex issues surrounding public space, art, and European identity.
