At the Mountains of Madness is a gripping novella by American author H.P. Lovecraft, written in February/March 1931 and first published in serial form in Astounding Stories from 1936.
The story follows Dr. William Dyer's account of a disastrous expedition to Antarctica in September 1930, where his team discovered ancient ruins and a mysterious secret beyond the Himalayan range.
Dyer recounts how his team found remains of fourteen prehistoric life-forms, previously unknown to science, with some specimens showing signs of tool use dating back millions of years. The discovery raises more questions than answers, leaving Dyer's account as a warning to others who might follow in their footsteps.
