Description
Artemisia Gentileschi was a pioneering artist and woman who defied convention in 17th-century Italy. Born into a family of artists, she taught herself to paint despite being illiterate, and her works depicted powerful female figures from Roman and biblical history. This novel, written by Anna Banti under the pen name Lucia Lopresti, tells the story of Artemisia's remarkable life, marked by both triumph and tragedy. First published in 1947, it remains one of the author's most acclaimed works, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life of this extraordinary woman. A new introduction by renowned critic Susan Sontag adds context to Banti's masterpiece, shedding light on the enduring significance of Artemisia's story.
