Description
Art Under Control in North Korea by Jane Portal explores the lesser-known world of art in North Korea, revealing how this isolated nation's secretive culture has been shaped by its dictatorial leaders. The book delves into the historical, political, and social contexts that have influenced North Korean art, examining the state-controlled role of artists and the range of art produced, from painting and calligraphy to architecture and applied art. Portal offers a thought-provoking analysis that compares the control exerted over artists by North Korean leaders with that of past regimes. Through its examination of archaeology's use for political ends, Art Under Control in North Korea sheds light on the ways in which art can be used to subvert a dictatorial regime.
