Description
In 1950s Milingimbi, a small island community in Arnhem Land, Australia, something extraordinary happened. Under the shade of tamarind trees, artists came together to create a distinctive style of painting that would capture the complexities of land, sea, sky and cultural inheritance in exquisite detail. Their individual approaches blended with a shared visual language, resulting in sixty-two breathtaking bark paintings by fifteen artists. This book presents these remarkable works for the first time, alongside ceremonial and utilitarian objects from a unique collection held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Developed in close collaboration with the Milingimbi community, it is the first publication to explore this exemplary art. New research conducted with the Milingimbi community sheds light on this previously underrepresented aspect of Australian art.
