Description
Whitby, for its size, is one of Britain's most visually documented towns. Over the years, it has attracted artists and photographers, who have captured its unique character in their work. This collection of 200 old photographs showcases the town's history, with many images never published before. The photographs are drawn from the archives of Whitby Museum, formed by the Literary and Philosophical Society in 1823. The earliest image dates back to 1862, while the majority were taken during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Notable photographers featured include Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, Tom Watson, Jack Vart, George Wallis, Hugh Lambert-Smith, John Tindale, and the Doran Brothers. The town's isolated location has contributed to its independence and self-sufficiency, with locals often taking their own route to get there or leave.
