Description

Aristophanes Lysistrata With Commentary 96 pages, paperback. This 2010 edition presents one of Aristophanes' few surviving plays, written in 411 BC. Lysistrata is a comic account of a woman's mission to end the Peloponnesian War by withholding sexual privileges from her husband and lover. The play explores the relationships between men and women in ancient Greece, using both double entendre and explicit language. The dramatic structure marks a shift away from traditional comedy, reflecting Aristophanes' growing interest in exploring complex social issues. This commentary provides insight into the author's innovative approach to theatre and his critique of the societal norms of his time.
