Through case studies in literature, history, politics, and philosophy, Saussy examines how comparison can be both abused and essential to understanding fairness.

By highlighting the pitfalls of comparison and proposing alternative approaches, Saussy sheds light on the importance of standards in evaluating cultural norms and values.
