Arctic Interlude: A Forgotten Arctic Operation during World War II. In October 1942, a daring Allied operation was launched to send merchant ships independently to North Russia from Iceland. Thirteen ships, including seven British, five American and one Russian vessel, set out on the perilous journey, with no escort provided. The ships were spaced over 200 miles apart, leaving them vulnerable to attack. The operation, code-named Operation FB, was a last-ditch effort to placate Soviet leader Stalin after two previous convoys had suffered heavy losses. Despite the risks, five of the ships reached Russia safely, while five were sunk or lost en route. The outcome was far from certain, with three ships forced to return to Iceland. This book tells the true story of Operation FB, drawing on personal recollections and historical records to recreate the drama and uncertainty of this forgotten Arctic operation.
