Archy and Mehitabel is a humorous collection of poems by Don Marquis. Originally published in newspaper columns from 1916 onwards, it was first published in book form in 1927. The stories centre around Archy, a philosopher cockroach who types messages to the author in lowercase letters, and Mehitabel, a free-spirited alley-cat whose motto is "Toujours gai." The poems explore various themes, including the transmigration of souls, social injustice, life in New York City, and death. Archy claims to have been a poet in another existence, while Mehitabel claims to be a reincarnation of Cleopatra. This book has become a cult favourite over the years and remains popular today. It features illustrations by George Herriman, who also created the legendary Krazy Kat cartoon strip.
