Description
Architrenius, a satirical allegory in dactylic hexameters, was completed by Johannes de Hauvilla in 1184. This poem follows its eponymous protagonist as he navigates the vices of school, court, and church, including the House of Gluttony and the Palace of Ambition. Johannes de Hauvilla's work is notable for its focus on a secular world where wealth and preferment are all-consuming. Using his stylistic virtuosity and the resources of Latin poetry, he condemns this world in a highly topical satire that anticipates the works of later writers such as Jean de Meun, Boccaccio, and Chaucer. This edition brings together the most authoritative Latin text with a new English translation, making it an important resource for scholars and readers interested in medieval literature.
